Sailing the Canadian Nationals With Chief Inspector Clouseau,                 Another Training Report from W10864by the faithful crew, Cato

Nick remains very patient—or maybe it’s his way of entertaining himself.  He is allowing me to mis-rig the spinnaker in every possible way.  The payoff for him is sending me onto the foredeck to fix it, and it’s not like he puts off throwing in a tack or a gybe if it suits him.  The good part is mathematically, unless I start repeating, we’re down to fewer than a half-dozen screw-up permutations left.  We hope to get through those in the practice races at the Worlds.

Having both been in the construction trades we share a dangerous propensity for the hammer approach to problem solving.  I doubt there is any piece of the boat we could not pull apart were it to thoughtlessly resist us.  But we are learning.  Sometimes if something seems wrong maybe it is wrong!  Ah, maturity.

Somebody has to get a video of a really good bit of slapstick we have developed.  We performed the routine once at the Nationals.  For those of you who may have missed it, as we round the leeward mark and stow the spinnaker pole we thread the aft end through the shoulder straps of Nick’s life jacket.  A brief hilarious look of doom pops onto his face just before the boom swings over.

We will not giving away any more 360s at the Worlds.

Pre-Worlds Nats produce tie at top!

A healthy 22-boat fleet - the biggest since 1999 - gathered at the Toronto Sailing & Canoe Club July 20-21 for our 54th annual Canadian Wayfarer Nationals in a final tune-up for the 2013 Wayfarer Worlds being hosted Aug. 3-10 at the Mississauga SC.

The teams displayed appropriately fine form in very close, exciting competition. After all seven scheduled races were completed in fine sailing winds on Toronto's "horrible Hummber Bay" (above), co-champions were declared in accordance with CWA Class Rules.

Defending champions, Peter Rahn and son, Alex, from Montreal, had to share their title with Simon Strauss of New York and crew, Joe Blackmore from Michigan, as each team ended up with 12 points.
